Why Stability is the Missing Link in Midlife Strength + Lasting Wellness
May 14, 2025You’ve likely been told to build strength, improve flexibility, and work on your balance as you age. And it’s true, these are important. But what you may not have been told is this:
If you’re building strength on top of instability, stiffness, or imbalanced joints, you may actually be reinforcing dysfunction and setting yourself up for more pain, not less.
That’s why true stability, the kind that comes from the inside out, is the foundation I help every client build before anything else.
Because strength without stability is like building your dream home on sand.
From BOSUs to the Nervous System: What I’ve Learned About Lasting Strength
When I first became a personal trainer, I was focused on muscles: which ones activated what movement, and how to train them effectively.
Later, as a Pilates teacher, I learned even more, specifically that some muscles are designed to stabilize joints, while others are meant to move them. That was a breakthrough.
But back then, like many trainers, I believed standing on a BOSU ball was the key to improving balance and stability. I even became an official BOSU-certified instructor.
And while those workouts helped improve strength, I now know they didn’t always create true stability.
How I Discovered the Missing Piece: Internal Stability
Everything changed in 2013 when I began training in the MELT Method™ with its creator, Sue Hitzmann.
For the first time, I learned that neurological stability, the deep, automatic support our bodies create through our nervous system and fascia must come first.
If your connective tissue (fascia) is dry, sticky, or out of balance, your joints will shift out of alignment. That’s when movement becomes inefficient or even dangerous. Lifting weights, doing yoga, or going for a walk may still feel “good,” but it could be compounding underlying dysfunction.
In other words: you can become stronger in the wrong patterns.
MELT helped me understand that before we strengthen, we need to stabilize. And before we stabilize, we need to hydrate and restore our connective tissue.
What is MELT and Why Does it Matter?
MELT is not massage. It’s not foam rolling. It’s not stretching.
It’s a gentle, science-based self-care method that supports your nervous system and connective tissue, helping your body feel safe, hydrated, and resilient.
The MELT Method uses specific sequences that follow four “R’s”:
- Reconnect with your body’s sensory feedback system
- Rebalance the neurological support system
- Rehydrate the connective tissue
- Release the neck and low back
By supporting these internal systems, MELT gives your body what it needs to build real, pain-free strength. This has been a game-changer for me, especially managing chronic inflammation from Hashimoto’s and recovering from a neck and head injury after a bike crash.
It’s also why MELT is one of the six essential components in my 6 Pillars of Wellness coaching program.
Why MELT is Just One Piece of the Puzzle
Over the last 12 years, I’ve studied anatomy, fascia, and movement with some of the leading experts in the world and what I’ve found is this:
Your body wants to heal. You just have to give it the right environment to do so.
That’s why in my 6 Pillars of Wellness, we don’t just work on strength or nutrition in isolation. We build a complete foundation that helps women over 50:
✅ Reclaim strength and muscle without injury
✅ Lose weight without restriction or burnout
✅ Improve joint alignment and reduce chronic pain
✅ Sleep deeper and recover faster
✅ Calm the nervous system and lower inflammation
✅ Stay active, mobile, and independent well into the second half of life
Whether it’s weight loss, joint pain, fatigue, or stiffness holding you back, I’m here to show you a better way.
In Closing: You Don’t Have to Accept Pain or Stiffness as “Normal”
Stability isn’t just about balance or muscles. It’s about creating a strong internal environment, physically and emotionally, so that you can show up for the things (and people) that matter most.
If you want to feel strong, steady, and confident in your body again and stay that way, I’d love to support you.
