Gone Are the Days of Fad Diets

Do you remember years ago counting calories? How about the Low Fat Diet? Remember Snackwells? Ugh…. There have been so many fad diets throughout the years. I succumbed to them as well. I remember back when I was maybe turning 12 or 13 I had a birthday party. One of my friends who came to the party gave me a diet book. First of all, it’s kind of a weird gift to give a 12 year old, but she was from a large family. I’m thinking her mom didn’t have the time or money to worry about a gift, maybe it was a regift? Maybe her mom thought I wanted to lose weight? But, I read that book cover to cover. There was a whole chart of foods and the calories they contained. That’s about all I remember about that book except for the fact that it opened my eyes to the fact that we “teen girls” should be concerned with how much we weigh. Did this book have an impact on how I thought about myself or how I ate? It must have made some impression if it’s the only gift from that birthday that I can still remember some 40 years later.
Can you remember back to what started to shape the way you thought about your weight? Back then we didn’t talk about health and wellness. Heck fitness was a new word in the 70’s. I don’t remember ever hearing the word wellness. But I do remember the words skinny, fat and cellulite. We’ve come a long way in the last 40 years.
Fast forward to today. What is important to you when it comes to your health, fitness and wellness? Being a woman in midlife and a grandmother, I want to stay healthy and strong. I want to remain independent as I grow older and enjoy all of my years on this earth.I want to avoid medications, hospitals and surgeries. I want to get out of bed in the morning without aches and pains, have the energy and stamina to ride my bike, hike, and be able to pick my granddaughter up off the floor. These are my WHY. What are your WHY’s? When you know your WHY it's easier to stick to healthier habits. We know it's not only nutrition and exercise that are important to keep our body and mind healthy and strong, but quality sleep, stress relief and quality of life all play into a healthy and happy life. Taking a holistic approach to health and wellness will give you so many more benefits than counting calories or putting yourself on a fad diet.
